Barcelona hotels placed in historic buildings

As everyone knows, 1992 was a milestone year for the city of Barcelona and, above all, it meant a deep urban transformation. The change was translated into the city’s opening to the sea, the recovering of Montjuïc sport facilities, the airport remodelling and, of course, the construction of several hotels –since the city’s hotel capacity was by far not enough to accommodate the number of visitors that was to come to Barcelona in the occasion of the Olympic Games.

After the sports event, the hotel building industry kept on investing and, actually, nowadays it still bets on the creation of hotels since, according to statistics, sometimes the great demand for accommodation in Barcelona does not match its offer.

Hotel buildings are normally done from scratch, although restoration of already existing buildings –and even of really old ones- is getting more and more common lately. We invite you to join us in a quick visit to some of them.

The first one is an important representative of Catalan “modernisme”, a real architectural gem designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner for the Fuster family and built between 1908 and 1911. In 2000, Hoteles Center purchased the majestic building and –with a wonderful remodelling that respected outstandingly its originality- turned it into Hotel Casa Fuster. As we go down Paseo de Gracia, we will come across Hotel Condes de Barcelona, that occupies, at the heart of L’Eixample, two old palaces of the so-called “Quadrat d’Or” – the most representative area of Catalan “modernisme” in Barcelona.

Perched on the Montjuïc mountain we find Hotel Miramar Barcelona, in a building that was designed in the occasion of the 1929 World Fair and was later to house Televisión Española’s tv studios in Catalunya. When the new studios in Sant Cugat were built, the building was abandoned and, for several years, different possibilities on what to do with it were considered. Finally, AC Hoteles was responsible for the remodelling carried out by Catalan architect Oscar Tusquets, who turned it into one the most impressive luxury hotels in the city that boasts wonderful gardens dating from the early 20th century. Today, it is part of Husa Hoteles.

In one of the tourist areas of the city, on an alley close to the Cathedral, lies Neri Hotel & Restaurante. The excellent reconstruction of this palace from the 18th century respected as much as possible the original atmosphere, materials and style.

Our tour ends in Las Ramblas with Hotel 1898, located in the old headquarters of “Compañía General de Tabacos de Filipinas” (the Philippines Tobacco Company). The building became property of the Sercotel chain, that eventually made of it a real urban gem –with a wide range of services and the best views over Barcelona’s Ramblas.
