The Barcelona World Race has begun

The port of Barcelona bids farewell to the skippers

On the 31st December, the second edition of the Barcelona World Race, the first and only non-stop double-handed (two-crew) regatta around the world, was inaugurated.

p>The race is organized by Fundació Navegació Oceànica Barcelona and is held every four years. The first edition was contested in 2007/2008, and the third one is scheduled for 2014.

The course of the competition around the world is from Barcelona to Barcelona via the capes of Good Hope, Leeuwin and Horn and the Cook Strait. The arrival of the first yacht is expected by the end of March 2011.

After the handing over of the mooring lines at Rambla del Mar, the mayor of Barcelona, Jordi Hereu, gave the starting signal at 1pm at the port of Barcelona in front of the W Hotel on the beach of La Barceloneta.

In this second edition, the Barcelona World Race is contested by 14 teams, among which are 5 Spanish yachts. Two of them, the Central Lechera Asturiana the Mapfre boast in their sails the slogan of the international promotion campaign sponsored by Turespaña ‘I need Spain’.
